Jesus, His Biography
To get to know someone, it is helpful to know his or hers life story or biography. We shall start out with a summary of this man's life.
Many years ago, a strange occurance happened in Nazareth, a small town in Galilee. It was reported that a young virgin in the town had been visited by an angel of the Lord. The virgin's name? Mary. The angel's message? She (Mary) would be with child and the babe would be God's Messiah. (Luke 1:26-38) Now Mary was betrothed to a carpenter named Joseph and he was devastated when the news reached him. He did not want Mary to be stoned (the punishment for unfaithfullness) being a kind and gracious man, so he thought of a way to get around it: he would divorce her. (Matthew 1:18-19) But after he had planned this, an angel appeared with a message for him. "Joseph, son of David," the angel said, "do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:20-21)
So Joseph obeyed the Lord's command and married Mary.
Then Casar Augustus, the ruler of Rome, annouced that he would have a census of the entire Roman world. Since Joseph was from the town of David called Bethlehem, he left Nazereth with his wife Mary andthe baby she carried. Mary's baby was born in this village one night while they were there. Reports of angels were heard around Bethlehem as shepherds came flying in from the places where they watched flocks that night. They came and worshiped the newborn boy in the animals' feed trough.
The little family of Jospeh, Mary, and Jesus stayed in Bethlehem for probably about two years. But after Magi from the East came to give their adoration to this boy prince, the child's life was threatened by the power-crazed King Caesar. The family escaped from a terrible slaughter in Bethlehem where all the baby boys two years and younger were killed in search of Jesus. They made their home in Egypt until Caesar died. After the king died, the family returned to the town of Nazereth and all was quiet until many years later...
